Power Tree’s patent pending energy storage technology device mechanically stores kinetic energy in a unique flywheel design. In general, flywheel energy storage works by accelerating a rotor which maintains kinetic energy as it spins. This stored energy can then be distributed out as the rotor slows down. The primary engineering challenge associated with flywheel technology has resulted from the extreme forces exerted on the rotors as they spin, causing them to lose shape and shatter. Power Tree, among other innovations, has devised a proprietary method of design which solves this considerable challenge by enabling our device to maintain integrity upon scalability of mass and speed.

Storage Capacity.

Power Tree’s energy storage technology design differs vastly from other technologies in the flywheel arena which only allow for small, lightweight devices that discharge electrical loads for mere seconds or minutes at a time and are mainly intended for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) back-up usage. Power Tree’s energy storage technology is designed for clean, efficient, cost effective multi-gigawatt storage capacity with hours of continuous megawatt discharge power, enabling widespread applications previously unattainable, surpassing other storage technologies such as batteries, pumped hydro, capacitors, etc.

Load Shifting and Load Smoothing.

The Power Tree Flywheel energy storage system provides cost efficiencies in two primary ways, “load shifting” and “load smoothing.” Load shifting involves the purchase and storage of electrical power during low-cost off peak times and discharge of that power during more expensive on-peak times, avoiding more expensive purchases of electricity from the utility. Load shifting, whether by end users such as office building commercial customers or the utilities themselves helps relieve peak period electricity use when utility systems capacity is stressed. The cost of electricity at peak times is much greater than at off peak periods because utilities dispatch “peaker plants” which have much higher operating costs than baseload units which provide off-peak power.

Use of the energy storage system in the load-smoothing mode addresses the well-known problem of transitory peak loads such as load peaks caused by motor startup. The effect is that for a short time an electric motor draws several times its operating current before reducing load to normal. This results in a large current increase and loss of efficiency and related costs. The Power Tree device absorbs this transitory load in real-time and recovers the lost power slowly over a much longer time period, reducing load to the grid and reducing peak demand charges to the commercial customer.

Energy Cost Balancing Smart Controller SystemTM.

The Power Tree Flywheel energy storage system utilizes the Power Tree Energy Cost Balancing Smart Controller SystemTM which permits remote operation, monitoring and load profiling. Remote operation and control will ensure the most efficient possible use of the dual modes on an hour-by-hour, real time basis and a single point operations center to operate the devices and control billing data.

Power Tree energy storage technology is scalable, can charge and discharge rapidly and simultaneously, has low maintenance requirements and an extended life-span of approximately 25 years. In addition, our device can be seamlessly integrated into commercial and utility grid applications as well as renewable energy resources such as wind and solar - providing technical and economic viability for the entire spectrum of electricity energy generation and transmission.
